Can You Remove a Google Review from Someone Who Was Never a Customer?

You receive a one-star Google review, but the name looks unfamiliar. You check your records, ask your team, and cannot find anyone matching the reviewer. Can you have the review removed?

Possiblyβ€”but an unfamiliar name alone does not prove that a review is fake. The strongest starting point is identifying a specific policy violation and gathering evidence that supports your concern.

Does Someone Need to Make a Purchase to Leave a Review?

Google’s policies focus on genuine experiences with a business. A completed purchase is not the only possible interaction: someone might call to ask about a service, visit your premises, or discuss a booking without becoming a paying customer.

That means β€œthis person never bought anything” is not, by itself, a reliable argument for removal. The relevant question is whether the review reflects a real experience and follows Google’s content policies.

Before drawing conclusions, consider whether the reviewer might have used a different name, contacted another team member, or visited with someone else.

When Might a Review Qualify for Removal?

A review may warrant reporting when it involves:

  • Fake engagement: An invented experience or content posted to manipulate a business’s rating.
  • A conflict of interest: For example, a competitor posting to undermine your business.
  • Off-topic content: Commentary unrelated to an experience with your business.
  • Harassment or threats: Content targeting people or encouraging abuse.
  • Personal information: Disclosure of protected private information without consent.

These categories appear in Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy. A review’s exact wording and context matter; a low rating or harsh opinion alone does not establish a violation.

What Evidence Should You Gather?

Before submitting a report, create a short record of the issue. Save the review link, a screenshot, the reviewer’s displayed name, and the date you noticed it.

Then document anything that helps explain your concern. Useful material could include a reference to a service you have never offered, details suggesting the reviewer meant another business, or messages directly connected to the review.

Distinguish evidence from assumptions. For example, β€œwe cannot find this name in our booking system” describes what you checked. β€œThis person definitely never interacted with us” makes a broader claim that your records may not establish.

Keep your explanation factual and redact unrelated personal information from supporting documents.

How to Report the Google Review

Sign in to the account that manages your Google Business Profile:

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
  2. Find the review and select Report.
  3. Choose the reason that accurately matches the issue.
  4. Submit the report.

You can monitor the outcome through Google’s Reviews Management Tool. Google says evaluations typically take several days. See its review reporting instructions.

What If Google Rejects the Report?

If Google finds no policy violation, an eligible review can receive a one-time appeal through the Reviews Management Tool. Select Appeal eligible reviews and follow the prompts. Google’s appeal guidance

Use the appeal to explain the specific issue clearly. Identify the relevant passage, connect it to the policy, and provide supporting evidence where possible.

Avoid repeating only that the review is unfair or that the name is missing from your records. Give the person assessing the appeal enough context to understand your concern without guessing.

How Should You Respond Publicly?

While you assess the review, a calm response can show future readers that your business takes concerns seriously.

For example:

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We would like to understand the situation, but we cannot identify the interaction from the details provided. Please contact our team directly with the date and relevant information so we can investigate.

Adapt the wording to your business. Avoid publicly accusing the reviewer of lying or revealing customer details.
